How to get your business on ChatGPT — and get it recommended

A practical 8-step guide for Indian businesses: how ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude pick which businesses to recommend, how to check where you stand, and what to fix first.

Updated 24 October 2026

More and more customers in India skip Google and simply ask an AI assistant: “best SSC coaching in Lucknow”, “good skin clinic near Indiranagar”, “which brand makes the best cotton kurtas”. India has over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users (TechCrunch). If the answer names three of your competitors and not you, you lose that customer before they ever see your website.

This guide explains how assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude decide whom to mention, and the exact steps to get your business into those answers. (Want the overview for every AI search — Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot? See how to get your business to show up on AI searches.)

How ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend

When someone asks a question that needs current information, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer from them. So two things decide whether you appear:

  1. Can it read your website? Its crawlers must be allowed in your robots.txt, and your page text must exist in plain HTML — most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript (Vercel).
  2. Do the pages it reads mention you? For a “best X in city” question, ChatGPT mostly builds its list from directories, “top 10” articles, review sites and Wikipedia — not only from business websites. In one study of local searches, 58% of ChatGPT's sources were business websites, 27% were third-party mentions and 15% were directories (BrightLocal).

Across 75,000 brands, being mentioned on other websites was the strongest signal linked to AI visibility (Ahrefs). That is the single most important idea in this guide.

Step 1: Check where you stand today

Ask two kinds of question — and ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, with web search on:

  • The “map” question — with your name: “What is Sharma Classes Lucknow? What are their fees?” Does it know you? Are the facts right?
  • The “gap” question — without your name: “Best SSC coaching in Lucknow?” Are you in the list? Who is, and which websites does it cite?

Never put your name in the second question — it biases the answer. Note the sources each assistant cites; that list is your to-do list for Step 6. (This is exactly what GapAndMap does for you every month.)

Step 2: Let AI crawlers in

Open yourwebsite.com/robots.txt. If you see Disallow: / under OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Google-Extended or PerplexityBot — or under User-agent: * — AI assistants can't use your site. Blocking GPTBot only opts you out of training and doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search. Full list and copy-paste rules: AI crawlers & robots.txt.

Step 3: Make sure your text exists without JavaScript

Many modern sites (React/Angular apps, some website builders) send an empty page and fill it in with JavaScript. Google can render that; ChatGPT's and Claude's crawlers mostly can't. Use our free AI Visibility Checker — if it finds almost no text on your homepage, turn on server-side rendering or pre-rendering.

Step 4: Publish one clear “facts” page

AI assistants answer “what is X, what are their fees” from whatever they can find. Give them one page that states, in plain sentences:

  • Who you are and what you do — one sentence, no slogans
  • Location(s), areas served, timings
  • Services/courses/products with real prices or fee ranges
  • Results, numbers and proof you can back up (selections, years, patients, orders)
  • Contact details that match your Google Business Profile exactly

Pages with concrete statistics and quotations get cited noticeably more often by generative engines (Princeton GEO study).

Step 5: Answer the questions customers actually ask

Add an FAQ that answers the real questions — “Do you have weekend batches?”, “Is parking available?”, “Do you ship COD?” — in short, direct answers. Mark it up with FAQ structured data. Structured data alone won't make AI recommend you (Ahrefs), but clear answers on the page do get used.

Step 6: Get listed where AI looks

Go back to the sources the assistants cited in Step 1. Typically, for Indian businesses:

  • Directories: Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART — plus your industry's own (Practo for doctors, Shiksha/CollegeDunia for education, Zomato for restaurants, MagicBricks/99acres for real estate)
  • “Best X in city” blog posts and local news — email the author with a short, factual pitch
  • Reddit / Quora threads where people ask for recommendations — answer honestly as the owner
  • YouTube — a short video with your name, city and service in the title and description

Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere. Never buy fake reviews — they get removed and can get you delisted.

Step 7: Keep content fresh

AI assistants cite noticeably fresher pages than Google's organic results (Ahrefs). Update your fees page, results and FAQ whenever something changes, and show the “last updated” date.

Step 8: Re-check every month

AI answers change constantly. Ask the same two questions every month so you can see whether your work is moving the needle — and which new sources the assistants started citing.

What about llms.txt? It's a cheap file worth adding, but no major AI engine has confirmed it reads it, and studies find most llms.txt files get no AI visits. Don't expect it to get you recommended. Read the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to list or recommend my business?

No. There is no paid listing inside ChatGPT's answers. It recommends businesses based on what it finds on the web: your own website and what other websites say about you.

Is there a ChatGPT business listing form?

No official one exists for regular businesses. Showing up depends on AI crawlers being able to read your site and on mentions across the sites ChatGPT cites — directories, articles, reviews.

How long does it take to start appearing in ChatGPT?

Technical fixes (unblocking AI crawlers, making text readable without JavaScript) can show up within weeks once your pages are re-crawled. Earning third-party mentions takes longer — usually a few months of steady work.

Does ChatGPT use Google results?

ChatGPT search uses its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) plus search partners. Strong Google SEO helps but is not enough: ChatGPT often cites directories and articles instead of the top Google result.

Why does ChatGPT describe a different business with my name?

If your name is common and your site doesn't clearly state who you are, where you are and what you do, AI assistants can confuse you with another company. A clear 'about / facts' page and consistent listings fix this.
