What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) means making your business show up in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Plain-English definition, how it differs from SEO and AEO, and what actually works.
Updated 24 October 2026
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business, brand or content appear in answers generated by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.
Classic SEO gets your page into a list of ten blue links. GEO gets your name into the paragraph the AI writes — because more and more people read that paragraph and never click a link.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page in search results | Be the direct answer (snippet, voice) | Be named and cited in AI-written answers |
| Where | Google, Bing results pages | Featured snippets, Alexa, Siri | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, AI Overviews, Perplexity |
| What wins | Relevance, links, technical health | Concise answers, structured data | Readable pages + mentions across the sources AI trusts |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks | Snippet ownership | Mention rate and accuracy in AI answers |
Where the term comes from
The name comes from a 2023 research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”. The researchers tested content changes and found that adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility in AI answers by roughly 28–41%, while keyword stuffing made it worse. Gains were biggest for sites that weren't already ranking at the top.
What actually works for GEO (2026 evidence)
- Mentions on other websites. Branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility in a 75,000-brand study (Ahrefs).
- Crawlable, server-rendered pages. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot don't execute JavaScript (Vercel). Allow the right AI crawlers.
- Specific facts in plain sentences — prices, numbers, locations, results — the things AI is asked about.
- Fresh content. AI assistants cite fresher pages than organic search (Ahrefs).
- Normal SEO. 76% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages already in the top 10 (Ahrefs).
What is overrated
- llms.txt — no major AI engine has confirmed using it; most files get zero AI requests. Details.
- Schema markup alone — adding JSON-LD to already-cited pages showed no measurable lift in AI citations (Ahrefs). Still good hygiene.
- “AI-optimised” content spam — keyword stuffing lowers visibility.
GEO for small businesses in India
Most GEO tools are built for global brands and cost $100–1,000 a month. For a coaching institute, clinic, shop or D2C brand, the work is simpler: let AI read your site, publish your real facts, and get listed on the handful of sites AI cites for your category and city. Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of GEO in SEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: improving how often and how accurately AI assistants (generative engines) mention and recommend you in their answers.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. AI assistants still read web pages, and Google's AI Overviews mostly cite pages that already rank in the top 10. You need both.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) started with featured snippets and voice assistants: getting your page chosen as the direct answer. GEO is about generative AI — getting named and cited inside answers written by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. In practice the terms overlap heavily.
Who coined the term GEO?
The term was popularised by a 2023 research paper from Princeton and other universities, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, which measured which content changes increase visibility in AI-generated answers.
How do I measure GEO?
Ask the AI assistants the questions your customers ask — once with your brand name and once without — every month, and track whether you're mentioned, whether the facts are right, and which sources are cited.
